"I ran the gamut with HVAC repair companies who were either not taking on any new customers or quoted ridiculous prices with 4 week lead times. Fortunately I called Dominion and received first rate help over the phone by one of the ownerâ s wife (with young children playing in the background) who said her husband would call me as soon as she could reach him. He called later that evening and said a technician would be out first thing in the morning. The other owner, Cameron, showed up at 10:00 am and had my air conditioning working by 11:00 at a cost $500.00 less than another company was going to charge me. Adam and Cameron left larger companies to go out on their own and are building their business one satisfied customer at a time. I couldnâ t be more pleased with their service and professionalism and thatâ s why Iâ ve signed up for their yearly service contract. Just one less thing for me to worry about at this stage in my life!"

We perform this screening when a business applies to join our network and, if the business is accepted, whenever concerns are brought to our attention. We're committed to maintaining a network of trusted home service businesses, and those who don't meet our criteria will be rejected or promptly removed from our network.

Criminal Background Check

Who does HomeAdvisor background check?

The owner or principal of each business in HomeAdvisor's network (with the exception of Corporate Accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot perform a background check on every employee of a business—the background checks are performed only on the owner or principal. As always, we recommend that you conduct your own research on the businesses you hire, including making inquiries directly with the businesses regarding their employee background check policies.

What does the background check cover?

We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal records search in the county in which the business owner or principal works. Our third-party vendor uses a national criminal database ("NCD") to screen service professionals. Business owners or principals with felony arrests that carry a pending decision or who are convicted of felonies in the past 7 years ago will not be admitted to the network. Businesses or owners convicted misdemeanors or felonies, or who have dismissed charges or arrests on their records involving rape/incest, sex offenses, or lewd and lascivious behavior at any point in time will not be admitted to our network.

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime at issue is a felony.

*The comprehensiveness of the NCD varies by state. Please be aware that the reporting in the NCD is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, SD, UT, VA, VT, and WY. After initial admission to the HomeAdvisor network, businesses are re-screened if a concern is reported to HomeAdvisor.

Licensing

We require all pros to attest that they carry the appropriate local and state licensing to practice their trade. Please note that HomeAdvisor does not confirm licensing. Do your own research using online ratings, reviews and through phone interviews before hiring a company.

If a business states that it's registered as a corporation or limited liability company, we confirm that the company is in good standing in the state in which they operate.
