"Having never bought a new roof, I didn't know what to expect.  Casey Cooke of Cooke and Son Roofing Co. made the process easy, straight-forward, and stress-free.  Casey made sure to schedule his visit to do the estimate when I was home; the two other companies who provided me estimates came when I wasn't home.  With that being said, Casey was able to explain his plan, the materials to be used, and my options.  He even scheduled time to discuss the estimate with me in person, which also included information about the materials and samples.  When the work started, his crew was efficient, polite, thoughtful, and hard-working; Casey was there on-and-off throughout the day; Casey quoted a two-day job, but he and his crew finished in one day (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.).  In the end the roof is beautiful and is definitely better than the original:  better flashing around the chimney, better venting, and better workmanship.  I highly recommend Cooke and Son Roofing Co. and would hire Casey again."

"It was a small job. They sealed the vents to the crawlspace, then, since there was already solid insulation panels on the walls, put a vapor/moisture barrier, in the form of a tarp, 4 feet wide and as long needed, completely around the crawlspace. It was then sealed to the walls with "nails" and adhesive. This seals the wood frame of the house from the 'Outside", the ground, which is the floor of the crawlspace. A 20 mil thick, quite heavy, "floor" was installed, also in the form of a tarp, It went up the walls about 3 feet and was taped to the 'tarp" on the walls, using a tape made for this application. The piers were wrapped with the same stuff and taped to seal the inside from the outside. the "floor" is also a vapor/moisture barrier, but, heavy enough to walk on if needed. This basically makes the crawlspace another room, rather than the outside. Our house is one year old and was already getting mold on the floor joists. Since the air in the crawlspace will now be heated in the winter and cooled in the summer, just like the rest of the house, the mold and cold (52 degrees) floors we experienced last winter will hopefully be eliminated. We shall see when dumb winter gets here."

"The project went great.  There were some weather delays but all in all, they finished earlier than I thought they would.  The entire crew was professional and hard working. My house was built in 1916 and the roof was in terrible shape.  There were three layers of asphalt shingles on top of cedar shakes and it still leaked.  I decided to put a second story on but it was proving too much for one person to do. I called around and when I found Honey Creek on Angie's List, he was here the same day to inspect and take measurements.  The estimate was prompt as well.  The crew came out and re-tarped my bad roof because there were storms coming (before they even started on any of the removal). Everything is great now, I'm at a spot where I can finish the interior and the exterior house.  We just had a tremendous storm and there were no leaks! :) I have before and after pictures that I will try to upload so everyone can see how big of a job it was.  Including the clean up as the old roof was a lot of material in the yard. After all is said and done, I'd definitely hire them to tackle the projects I shouldn't or can't do.  I also highly recommend them for any construction needs.  I can't put into words how great of a job they did."

FAQs for fireplace and wood stove service projects in Chrisman, IL

Start with a professional inspection. If damage is limited to a few bricks or the crown, a targeted repair helps keep costs and disruption to a minimum. Severe leaning, widespread mortar failure, or major fire damage usually signals it’s time for a complete teardown and rebuild. Your contractor will outline both price tags, but remember that rebuilding a failing stack is often cheaper than repeated patch jobs and the water leaks or fire hazards they allow.

Cracks provide water with an easy path into the masonry, weakening the bricks and mortar and increasing the risk of collapse or fire. Gaps can also let hot gases and sparks escape into attic spaces. Call a chimney pro as soon as you see cracking so they can seal small joints or recommend a larger rebuild before minor damage turns into a costly emergency.

Smoke rolling back into the room often indicates a blocked flue, a broken damper, or a drafting issue. Have a sweep inspect the damper, flue liner, and any obstructions right away. Most fixes involve clearing debris, repairing the liner, or adjusting the damper so the fireplace pulls air correctly. Don’t light another fire until a professional pinpoints the cause and confirms your system is venting safely.

Most policies cover chimney repairs caused by a sudden, covered event, such as lightning, a fallen tree, or a house fire. They won’t cover damage that stems from neglected maintenance or everyday wear. Review your policy or contact your agent before scheduling work to determine what documentation your insurer requires and what costs you will be responsible for.

Component life spans vary. Clay tile or cast-in-place liners last close to 50 years, while stainless-steel liners last 15 to 20 years. Mortar requires attention every 25 to 30 years, while crowns last 50 to 75 years. Use these numbers as a maintenance roadmap: schedule regular inspections, budget for future upgrades, and replace parts before age-related cracks develop into more significant problems.
