Are your utility costs getting out of hand? If so, don’t rush into an expensive energy efficiency remodel. Instead, check out these energy-saving home hacks from lifestyle blogger and HomedAdvisor contributor, Michelle Hinckley.
1) Keep your water heater’s temperature below 120 degrees: Your water heater keeps your home’s water at a consistent temperature year-round. So, if your heater is set to a balmy 150 degrees, the extra energy needed to heat your water will add up. Bump your heater’s temperature down to 120 degrees (or less) to see a difference in your heating costs.
Most water heaters have clearly marked temperature adjustments. If you’re unsure about lowering you heater’s temperature, check your owner’s manual or call a professional.
2) Replace your HVAC or furnace filter every three months: Dirty filters impact the efficiency of your home’s heating and cooling systems. You may not notice an immediate difference, but the evidence of a dirty filter will show up on your energy bill. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual or call a professional before changing your filters.
3) Seal air leaks around doors, windows, outlets and light switches: Heating a drafty home is like throwing money out your window — literally. To combat a leaky house, feel for drafts coming from windows, doors, outlets or light switches. If you notice leaks, use caulk to seal the openings. For indoor leaks, use a paint-friendly caulk that won’t crack or form mildew. If you notice large holes or cracks on the outside of your home, use a moisture- and heat-resistant caulk.
