It all started in 1964 when firefighter, Leroy (Bud) Woodruff, began learning the sheet metal trade while working with Sweets Sheet Metal in Wilmette, IL. In 1969, while still employed full-time at the Winnetka Fire Department, he took his passion further and began contracting business from his garage. He enlisted his three sons in the family business and put them to work climbing ladders and learning the trade. With his meticulous attention to detail, the company continued to grow and Bud furthered his experiences while working on some of the North Shore's finest homes. In 1984, Bud moved his business out of the garage and to his first shop in Glenview, IL, and later bought his first building in Lake Bluff, IL. He retired from the fire department in 1989 and began working for his small business full-time. To continue the legacy Bud started, his three sons took over the business and began expanding their expertise to include a wide range of exterior construction applications.

In 1986 John Gallagher had one goal – to provide top quality exterior remodeling products and workmanship at a reasonable price along with incredible service before and after the job. Exterior Designers Inc started with and maintains that philosophy and mission.
"I have had the pleasure of working with John Gallagher, owner, of Exterior Designers, Inc. (EDI) several time over the past twenty years. I first met John as a young new homeowner. We needed a roof and also were in the market to replace the outdated aluminum siding. I always begin a job with at least three estimates, and we were working within a budget. EDI was not the least expensive but was the only company whose owner (John) came out and explained what was needed and what was not. While the other estimates were eager to make the most of our service call, John suggested getting a layer placed over the original roof at a less expensive cost to us. He also advised it would probably last about seven to ten years. Additionally, while other contractors tried selling us high end siding (cedar), John explained that while cedar would look nice, it comes with a lot of maintenance and in reality, the neighborhood tended towards vinyl. Again, he could have talked us into a more expensive choice, especially since my taste and budget is not always in sync, however, he did not. He steered us towards the more economical choice. Our layover roof lasted 19 years without even one leak! That’s great craftmanship. And my siding looks as new as it did when we first had it applied. This summer when I decided to replace the roof in its entirety, I called upon John to do the job. Again, he came out and explained all the options. He does not attempt to sell the best product as many contractors do. Rather, he listened to what I wanted and steered me towards a mid-range quality roof with the architectural shingles I desired, while working within my budget.
