Framing to be Repaired: Roof framing
Comment: Prior owners (at least 10 years ago) added a large (12' x 8') storage loft to garage. Loft is attached to two walls and suspended from two roof trusses. Was in attic and found that one roof truss which loft is suspended from had split at one point and previous owners had repaired it. The diagonal brace from that truss to the roof has partially split and is no longer attached securely to the horizontal part of the truss (it wiggles a bit). Don't know if that part was broken when we bought the house (maybe part of the break that split the horizontal part of the truss) or if is a more recent problem. It could have been missed by the home inspector as the split is only visible on one side and the truss looks ok until you try to move it, then you can see it isn't properly attached.
Roof does not appear to be sagging, and garage ceiling looks ok as well (no visible bowing). We have removed all but a handful of lightweight items from the loft.
Looking to get roof truss repaired, as well as evaluation of whether the loft is safe or will eventually collapse on my car. If it is not safe, also looking at estimate to remove loft.
