"We had a 33-year old cedar shake roof on our home in need of replacement and had dragged our feet about replacing it with a less flammable modern roof.  We were nervous about how it would change the look of our home, a gambrel style redwood home with multiple dormers and pitches.  We chose Owens-Corning Woodmoor shingles after years of looking.  We had 5 different roofers come out to bid the job.  The prices ranged wildly.  We chose Church/Jerry's Roofing for three main reasons: The price was among the lowest.Gerrin asked us many more questions and gave us more options about the understructure of the roof; others only asked about the particular shingles we wanted.Gerrin is an active community volunteer and the company gives back to the local community, an important factor for us. The roofers, Derrick and Clay, worked hard and meticulously, performing quality work.  They were interested in our feedback and pleasant to have around (though having people climbing over your roof for a week is still awkward).  Each day they cleaned up the area well before leaving.  Our roof is steep with many "cut ins" and they did very nice work.  There was one incident when the workers had one idea how to finish off a dormer that we didn't like at all and they had to tear it off and redo it, which they did and which looks wonderful now. Gerrin came back afterwards to inspect the roof (we appreciated this!) and brought our bill.  No surprises in the bill and we paid the estimate we had received before. We're surprised actually that we love the new roof!  I was prepared to not like it, having loved the look of the cedar shakes."

"They built a beautiful 4 seasons room for us which included demo of existing deck and metal cover. They took care of everything from foundation with drainage, roof, walls, windows, doors, siding and all. Excellent suggestions, worked well through things and gave us a beautiful elegant new room at a reasonable price."

"After a number of discussions & estimates with different roofing companies we chose Pressure Point. We did not select the roofing company advised by USAA. Matt Stone of Pressure Point was the most knowledgeable and answered all my questions in keeping with what I had learned in my intense self-taught knowledge about roofing. We also had 6 sky lights that were over 35 years old & needed to be replaced as well. And given that the house was built in 1980, we also replaced all the gutters and downspouts. I am a very critical person. My occupation is a scientist involved with leading edge cancer research. I am used to analyzing situations & coming up with solutions. Rarely do I glibly give any person or company an A rating. Matt and the entire crew at Pressure Point were outstanding in all aspects of their work, from A to Z. Wood rot was removed & replaced. The old roof tiles were quickly disposed of. No mess or bother on my part. New underlayment was installed & Decra stone covered metal roofing was used (rusticoclay style). Pressure Point also replaced a huge beam supporting our car port that had undergone wood rot. Everything that was done, was done right. The price below includes new roof, new skylights (some solar powered with shades) and new gutters as well as replacement of a huge 25 foot long massive beam in the car port."

"This is a very professional company. We appreciated the fact that Mr. McGowan sat down with us and explained in detail what he would do but he above and beyond to make sure everything was beyond cleaned. Me being disabled my concern was safety and they made sure everything was cleaned at the end of each day. Out of three bids patiot roofing was the lowest out of the three. Thank you Eric 5 stars Sir"

"Rocket Construction replaced our shaker roof with a composite roof. We met with Matt and went through all of our choices and once we were ready to move forward they got us on the schedule. The crew that he sent to do the work was so friendly and hard working. We enjoyed chatting a bit with them each day. They worked diligently each day and got the job done quickly. They arrived promptly each morning and picked up each evening before heading out. Matt came by the day after everything was finished up to check the work himself and to see if we had any questions or concerns and to be sure we were satisfied. He is a genuinely nice guy who cares about his customer service. We would highly recommend them to others, and in fact already have!

"Truly one of the most professional and hard-working contractors I have seen. They have been very thorough with the job, the preparation to paint on our old house that has been needing a new coat of paint for a long time has been extensive and most certainly not haphazard. There are so many different places where the wood has rotted out and they continue to take that all out and replace where needed like a professional job should be done. I have seen many contractors brush these types of things over due to the extra amount of work it takes, but that is not these guys. This company will make sure a job is done right! On a personal note, I also have a baby I need to put down for a nap each day, and they have been so understanding to work on the other side of the house and keep quiet until my baby wakes up. HUGE thank you to this company and their skill, professionalism, and positive attitudes."

"I needed roofing repair not pressure washing and this company did not do that job. They were referred to me in error. The gentleman that I spoke to was very nice and gave me ideas of where I should go from there."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Grants Pass, OR

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
