"My experience with this company was not so great. We called them on a Thursday afternoon to come out and look at our furnace which was dripping water. I was thrilled when they said they could come out that same day. The tech arrived and diagnosed our issue very quickly, but the part had to be ordered so they would have to come back the next day to install it. The part was called a collector box and it basically is a large rectangular piece of plastic housing with a gasket that collects condensate. It was leaking from both bottom corners. He quoted us $800 to replace it. I thought that price was kind of steep, but whatever, sure go ahead and get our heat working. The part arrived the next day and the same tech from the previous day arrived shortly after to install. This is where things start to go downhill. After he gets it all buttoned up, he announces that the new collector box didn't come with an exterior gasket. He claimed he couldn't remove the old gasket from the old collector box because it was too deteriorated. The manufacturer doesn't sell the gasket separately, but he'd be willing to replace our perfectly functioning motor (which comes with a new gasket which is what we really needed) for the low low price of $1900 additional dollars. Better yet, he suggested we replace our whole furnace for somewhere in the neighborhood of $6000. He even offered us financing with a monthly payment plan! So an $800 repair has suddenly ballooned into $6000. Something didn't seem right so I did a quick Google search, found the schematic for our furnace, located the part number for the gasket and ordered it online. THE PART COST $6.00!! We advised the tech that we were not prepared to spend such a large sum of money and to please put the old collector box back on our furnace and leave. As it turns out, it was NOT the collector box that needed replacing. The box itself was in great condition. It was the INTERIOR gasket that had worn out and was leaking water. The EXTERIOR gasket that goes between the motor and the collector box did not even need replacing. However for 6 whole dollars plus shipping, we received both gaskets for our unit and our 8 year old furnace is working great now with no leaks. Also the motor that they quoted us $1900 to replace unnecessarily, only cost $125 on the same website brand new with the gasket. I understand there are labor costs involved with any repair, but Christ! And here's the kicker, it's been more than a week since this whole fiasco took place and they haven't refunded our money as of yet. Matter of fact, there was a new charge from them that appeared on our credit card statement today. May have to fight it through the credit card company, who knows. Our basement has constant video surveillance so this was all captured on video. Needless to say, we will not ever call this company again to repair anything and could not in good conscience recommend their service to anyone. Proceed at your own risk."

"Wonderful company! Last year we hurried up and had new home heating and cooling system installed just as the pandemic was hitting. The installation was quick and painless. In fact, the workmen finished about two hours early without cutting any corners. Very professional! The representative, Tom, was very personable and came out to check the finished job. I believe we may have even gotten an upgrade on the equipment. The two systems have work perfectly. The two maintenance visits were perfect as well. The workman, Tim, arrived on time, took his time to do his job well, and was very polite without being intrusive or falsely friendly. We chose Maglish because a colleague from work recommended them. And sure enough, the best recommendations come from friends. We look forward to Maglish servicing our new systems for decade to come. We will look to them to do other work as well."

Water softeners consist of three main components: a mineral tank, a brine tank, and a control valve. In some smaller units, the mineral tank and brine tank are combined into one cabinet.
Professionals install whole-home systems at the point of entry of the main water line. Smaller units are installed under sinks or near a washer—these units only soften the water for that fixture, not the entire home.
Mineral Tank: Hard water passes into the mineral tank through resin beads, and an ion exchange occurs. Magnesium and calcium ions are exchanged for sodium or potassium ions from the brine tank.
Brine Tank: The brine tank contains sodium or potassium to recharge the resin.
Control Valve: The control valve determines when to clean the resin beads.
Choosing between a salt-based or potassium-based water softener depends on your priorities. Salt-based systems effectively remove hard-water minerals, regenerate efficiently, and are cost-effective. However, they may not be ideal for individuals on low-sodium diets. Potassium-based systems neutralize minerals without removing them and regenerate more frequently. They are more expensive but offer a healthier and more environmentally friendly option. If sodium levels are a concern and cost isn't a major factor, a potassium system may be the better choice.
To calculate your water softener's capacity, determine your grains per gallon (GPG) number by:
Multiplying the number of people in your home by 90. The average number of gallons used per person for washing, drinking, and cooking ranges from 80 to 100 gallons per day.
Multiplying that result by the hardness of your water. The average grains per gallon in the United States is 10 but can range from 0 to 17. You can find your GPG number by purchasing an at-home water testing kit.
Installing a water softener takes between two to four hours on average. The exact duration depends on the complexity of the unit and whether additional plumbing or electrical work is required. If modifications to existing pipes are necessary, installation may take longer. Preparing the installation area by clearing any obstructions can help streamline the process.
Water softeners can last up to 25 years with proper maintenance and care. The lifespan depends on the type and quality of the unit you choose. Single-tank electric water softeners may last around 12 years, while higher-quality models tend to last longer. Regular maintenance, such as routine inspections and timely replacement of salts or potassium, helps extend the life of your system. Most water softeners require minimal repairs over their lifespan.
