"Critical: Professionalism, Value I called Omega to check out smoke transfer between flues. Al quoted flue top dampers at $900 each and cleanings at $300 each. He said he would need to schedule a day to do the work. Thinking this must be an extensive project, I bought it. Ten days later I finally was called to say they would come that afternoon to do it. After the cleaning they glued dampers to the tops of the flues and were done in about 45 minutes. Al defended his $750/hour labor rate and double cleaning rate, saying it was due to his "high overhead" costs that I didn't understand. I still don't understand. Omega Construction is aptly named, they are the last one you should think of calling. They apparently only maintain their good BBB rating because the BBB doesn't consider "pricing issues" or "buyer's remorse" in their calculations. BBB is basically another way to advertise."

Biweekly service was contrac -ted but the team came in one week, charged $94. Neighbor complained about clumps of grass tossed on her lawn by worker. I called and told the agent that I wanted to stop all services immediately due to overcharging and failure to follow agreed costs. i WAS TOLD i HAD TO PAY $60 FOR EACH REMAINING SERVICE, FOR A TOTAL OF $600! No, chimney caps do not keep rain out entirely. However, chimney caps minimize rain and ice accumulation inside the chimney, preventing significant water or ice buildup in your home. They must remain partially open to allow exhaust to escape. As such, they do not provide a completely waterproof barrier.
Chimney caps can last three to 25 years or longer, depending on the quality of the material. Galvanized chimney caps tend to have shorter lifespans, but stainless steel, aluminum, and copper caps can last more than 25 years, making them some of the soundest chimney cap investments you can make.
Generally, the top of the chimney cap must be at least five inches above the top of the flue. If you hire a handyperson for your chimney cap installation, they can advise on the size and type of cap to purchase.
Chimney crowns—similar to chimney chase covers—are flat areas directly beneath the chimney cap. The installer reinforces the top of the chimney with mortar or concrete to shed water and provide a protective cover for your chimney, sealing the top. A chimney cap is still necessary to protect the flue against weather and animals.
