My name is Shane Nelson I am the owner of DISCOUNT RENOVATIONS. We have been in business for 16 Years and we pretty much can do it all. The only service we do not provide is carpet. We specialize in bathroom and kitchen remodels. We are very well trained with plumbing, tile, electrical, drywall, painting, carpentry, roofing, and I could keep going. So instead of calling 5 different contractors for one job we can handle it all. Thanks for your time and consideration. Feel free to call 336-655-8402 anytime for questions or appointments. My workmanship speaks for itself. If you want quality work at a fair price then I'm your guy. I am not the cheapest person out there and for good reason. I stay busy so if you are needing work done immediately I'm probably not going to be that guy. I will try my best to accommodate your situation, and can typically schedule site visits within a few weeks. I work long hours to try and get the job done in a timely manner. Thanks for your time and consideration. Please text me or call at 336 655 8402. I will see a text message and respond to it the fastest for I work all day until about 7 or 8 so I do not answer the phone unless needed while putting 100% focus on each job.
"I found Shane Nelson on Angi's List. I contacted him about doing an addition onto a mobile home. On Monday January 6 He brought his tool trailer. On Tuesday January 7, after dark, he brought a small load of lumbar and a machine. I paid him $15,000.00 on January 7. After I paid him, I asked him if he was licensed to work in Virginia and he said no. I asked him if he would be able to get a permit and do the job and he told me it shouldn't be a problem. On Wednesday January 8, I called the building office of Virginia, they told me an unlicensed contractor would not be able to get a building permit. I tried to call and text him several times. On Wednesday afternoon I finally talked to him and asked him if I could just pay him a little amount of money for his time and trouble. I told him to not do anything else concerning the job until I decided what we were going to do about the building permits. I told him I would let him know Thursday morning what I wanted to do. I tried calling him 8:30 am and called several times and also send text messages. He texted me late Thursday evening he text and told me he was coming and bringing material. I texted him and asked him what about the permits. I told him we needed to talk about what is going on. I tried calling him several times and he called me back and told me he had talked to the permit office. He said the permit office told him that I could get the permit in my name and tell the permit office that I was having a family member to do the addition and that I was not going to pay the family member any money. I told him that I did not want the responsibility of the permits or the job and that is why I had hired him. He told me to not worry about permits and that I was overreacting. He said no one would know anything about it. My husband passed away in August from Cancer and Shane told me that if anything came up with it that I could say my husband did the work before he passed away. I told him I was not telling a lie about my dead husband. I asked Shane if I could just pay him $5000.00 for his troubles and if he would give me $10,000.00 back and we could call the job off. He told me that he did not have any of my money left. He said he spent it all on material from a scrap yard that had a no return policy. Then he said it was my fault that I called the job off and he had put off work to do my job for next to nothing. \ He estimated the job at $43,000.00 and that was with him just doing outside of the addition and that price was with me doing the inside work. I told him that my husband sold his car and truck before he passed with cancer so I could have some money and that's the money I gave Shane. I begged him for 10,000.00 back and that I would give him 5,000.00. I told him that I was a sick widow woman with a heart condition, and I begged him to give my money back. He said that money was his for his work and material. I asked him why did you buy material after I told you that I wasn't going to do the job without permits. I have all text messages and pictures of the materials that he brought. I still have not received any money back from him."

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.
Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.
Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.
You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.
Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
