"The first HVAC contractor (a national chain) I had in to look at my central A/C diagnosed the air handler's fan blowing backwards as a result of a lightning strike scrambling the circuitry. (I told them about the lightning strike in the interest of full disclosure.) This other contractor said it likely needed a new fan but because of the strike they would not repair it. Instead, they would only replace the entire air handler...to the tune of $5700. We were prepared to suffer through the imminent heat wave and fork over the big bucks, but I wanted to get at least one other quote. I had found B&M on HomeAdvisor and requested an appt for a quote. HomeAdvisor wound up canceling the appt because they hadn't heard back from B&M. I decided to call directly. I talked to Paul M and he said they were so busy and couldn't commit to the HomeAdvisor appt time but that they would squeeze me in. I was expecting only a quote, but they didn't give up and wound up fixing it on the spot. It's been working like a champ through the heat wave, and it only cost me $217. Paul even followed up a few days later to ask how it was performing. I highly recommend B&M."

"Contractor Recommendation: Norfolk County Heating & Cooling Our 1895 refurbished Victorian's 3rd-floor mini split unit needed repair. Leaking lines were replaced. A chemical reaction between the copper line and wrapped insulation caused pinhole leaks in the line set. Manufacturers recalled that the warranty had expired and the unit was cooling poorly. Four contractors were contacted for estimates. Owner Patrick and project supervisor Renato excelled. They quickly listened and explained the problem, process challenges, and possible solutions. The price given was accurate and a fraction of the others I received. That worried me until it became clear the other contractors had quoted outrageous pricesâ either their company was understaffed and didn't want the small project or thought the customer was ignorant. The other contractors pressured us to upgrade from line replacement to system overhaul. One refused to provide an itemized breakdown of the FIVE times Norfolk H&C estimate but continued contacting me to finalize the sale without changing the price or explanation. Renato visited the day before the appointment to take additional photographs and check his materials. On replacement/installation day, Renato and his assistant were punctual and polite, knocked and asked permission before entering the property, and were great to our small dog. They avoided disturbing a newly planted lawn and cleaned the house and area. Renato showed me the finished project, how he installed it, what he replaced, and its system testing. An evaporator coil is the chilled indoor coil that pulls heat out of your home’s air. As warm air passes over it, the refrigerant inside absorbs the heat and sends it outdoors, leaving cooler air behind. When the coil wears out or leaks, you’ll notice weaker cooling, higher bills, or even small puddles of refrigerant around the unit.
You’ll know an evaporator coil is on its last legs when airflow turns weak, the air feels lukewarm, or your energy bill suddenly spikes. Short cycling, hissing sounds, and visible refrigerant leaks are other red flags. Acting quickly keeps the repair bill smaller and prevents a full system breakdown, so call an HVAC pro as soon as you spot these issues.
With routine filter changes and a yearly tune-up, most evaporator coils last 10 to 20 years. Heavy summer use, skipped maintenance, or corrosive indoor air can shave years off that span, while a lightly used, well-kept system can reach the upper end.
