"ACS installed a new Bryant heat pump + furnace. The equipment is high quality and the team was knowledgeable, flexible, and willing to answer all my questions. They accommodated a change in scope on the day of install from just installing a heat pump to installing a furnace + heat pump combo. This set the team back a few hours for the last minute parts request, but they powered through a very long day and stayed until the job was finished. All customer service goes directly through the owner operator. Originally this seemed like a plus, but I think they would benefit from support staff. I needed to edit and downgrade this review after a few negative experiences. Some changes are related to issues noticed after the install. The unit was not secured to the pad outdoors and also was not attached to the house. Holes cut into the corner of the garage slab in order to pass through the lines were not patched, leaving a break in the envelope. Mark promised to follow up on both of these, but he did not send anyone out to take care of this. Mark also directly promised that our install would qualify for Energy Trust of Oregon incentives for $3000, when in fact it is clear after speaking directly with Energy Trust representatives that our install did not qualify for any amount of rebate. This promise was echoed throughout the quote and the install process. I believe that the lack of a support staff is causing some shortcutting or disorganization when it comes to managing some of these details - I would prefer to assume that ACS did not know the details of the incentive rather than that they purposefully deceived me, but I dont feel comfortable recommending them given these circumstances."

Climate Control provides high quality residential and commercial heating, air conditioning and indoor air quality systems, repairs as well as scheduled maintenance services. These systems include the client’s homes and businesses. Climate Control, established in 1989, focuses in the add-on, replacement and HVAC service business in both the residential and commercial marketplace. The company grew out of a vision of the owners to focus on the service and add-on replacement business. The founder’s previous HVAC service experience was commercial only but saw an opportunity in the residential add-on, replacement and service business that was under served. By focusing on long term relationships through planned maintenance and providing high quality HVAC repair and service, the company established a loyal client base. With a specific focus, the company can achieve consistently higher standards to benefit the client.

"Decent service, but way too expensive. They charged me $175 per lb for R410A for my system, if my system required more than 6 lbs. Turns out my sytem required 12 pounds, so my final bill was more than $1000 more than the iniitial quote. When I checked online, R410A could be bought for $10 per lb, in a 25 lb container. Other HVAC companies I called (after the fact), quoted prices of $40-$80 per lb for R410A. Make sure to ask how much they charge for refrigerant before hiring this company!!"

"Tony and his crew were top of the line. My AC went down during this heatwave, and it was just one more thing in a bunch of complications I was having at the moment, the main one being that my son was having his wisdom teeth pulled, and I didn't want him to spend the night in a 100 degree house. I called Tony and he not only offered to make the job work time-wise, but he did it for the best price. Friendly, courteous, completely trustworthy. I can't recommend them enough."

We are happy to provide handyman, home repair and home improvement services to the broader Portland area - from Oregon City to Scappose and Forest Grove to Gresham, including Lake Oswego, West Linn, Beaverton, and all areas of Portland. Our specialty is anything in and around the home (or business) that takes between two hours and two days to complete. We offer free over-the-phone estimates and firm appointment times to save you time, all our handymen are licensed, bonded, and ensured as our employees, and we guarantee our work for a year.

"I was charged $150 to have nothing done except make work for myself moving everything out of the room and now moving it back in. Where to begin, first off…do yourself a favor. Anything more than say a small job that you could probably do yourself with a youtube video showing you step by step, get a legit service to come on out and view the job with their own eyeballs to tell you if they can do it. The individual who showed up was very nice so I lay no blame on him, but I spoke over the phone with their main office about having some floor squeaks I wanted fixed. Pull back carpet, find joists, screw it down and put carpet back. I was told that some parts of the carpet could tear and that but fixing the squeak another squeak maybe in time shows up elsewhere. I understood what was said and was told the 4 hour package should be what I need. We moved forward… Our guy arrived on time but we cleared the room to make it easy and was told he can pull the carpet or drill through carpet, but I wanted it done right, he mentioned they do not put the carpet back. On the phone when I agreed to go forward, I was told that it would go back and even knew the risks but a few times our guy said, “no we do not put the carpet back” and you need a carpet specialist. Then when the 1 job was a wash, I was informed I must pay $150 for the trip out which we were both very upset about. I asked him to just try and install a light fixture to make use of the hour though I was going to do it myself later. Through no fault of his own, when the box opened it was missing a critical mounting component. So, no light mounted. In short, unless it is an ULTRA small job, get people who specialize in your needs. People need to come out and inspect the job so the handyman knows what the job is exactly rather than an office saying they can do anything no problem and then not deliver. I was told they can reschedule and do everything then I can call a carpet specialist to put the old carpet back down as it was to simply be rolled back some, at that point I’d rather 1 person do it all and Ace is NOT it. The house has lots of small projects but honestly, I don’t see myself ever using them again. I honestly feel like I was robbed."

Heat pump repair or services FAQs

Heat pumps pull heat from an outdoor source (the air, the ground, or a body of water) through refrigerants to warm your home. They can also keep your home cool in the summer by pushing warm air outside if you have a two-way heat pump system. Unlike other heating systems, a heat pump doesn't generate heat; it just moves it.

There are four maincomponents of a heat pump:

  • Evaporator: The heat is absorbed from outside into a low-pressure, liquid-state refrigerant. The refrigerant rapidly heats up and changes to a vapor.

  • Compressor: This pressurizes the refrigerant (now in a vapor state), causing it to rise in temperature.

  • Condenser: This cools the refrigerant, releasing the heat into the surrounding environment. As the gaseous refrigerant cools, it condenses into a liquid.

  • Expansion valve: This reduces the pressure of the cooled refrigerant and carries it back to the evaporator for the heating process to repeat.

Replacing a heat pump costs between $4,200 and $7,600. The actual cost depends on the type of heat pump. Geothermal models are typically the most expensive to replace, with the price of the unit plus labor ranging between $6,000 and $20,000. Air source models cost between $4,500 and $8,000 to replace, while the replacement costs for a mini split unit run between $1,300 and $8,000.

The primary alternatives to a heat pump include an attic fan, an electric baseboard heater, radiant heating, and a traditional furnace.

  • Attic fan installation costs are affordable and effective for homes in moderate climates that only need a small amount of cooling in the summer.

  • Electric baseboard heaters are a good option for small spaces and homes without a gas line.

  • Radiant heating systems are less expensive than heat pumps and designed for homes that don't experience harsh winters.

  • Traditional furnaces are less costly to install but far less efficient and cost-effective to run.

The average heat pump is designed to last about 14 years, roughly the same as a central air conditioning system (12 to 15 years). Newer models can last 20 years or more. How long your heat pump lasts depends on how frequently you use it and whether you perform routine maintenance. An annual heat pump tune-up costs between $75 and $200.

Some of the qualities to look for in a heat pump repair provider are professionalism, accessibility, and plenty of customer references. Your provider should have several years of industry experience, familiarity with all three types of pumps, and replacement parts ready. Shop around and compare multiple heat pump repair companies to find the best option for your needs and budget.
