". What kind of a scam is this??! See if you can follow this one. I had purchased a dishwasher with installation included (usually about $140) but the store would not install it because the shut off valve was soldered to the water line. So I was looking to schedule a plumber to come later on the same day as the dishwasher was redelivered. That way I know if the dishwasher is working fine and have time to address return or repair. When I called Matthews and sent a picture of the soldered valve, they told me a dishwasher installation is $225, and replacing the valve would just be charged hourly at $150/hour. She reassured me the pricing basis is hourly for anything additional I needed done and I could expect to pay for about one additional hour on account of the soldered valve needing to be replaced, $225 + $150. This was very clearly stated and I felt my questions had been covered. I offered to send any other pictures or answer questions but she assured me the hourly pricing would be fair. I coordinated the delivery and the plumber, and made sure their schedule allowed enough time; I was told, the appointment allows two hours and that should allow enough time to take care of the valve. Then the plumber was sick so installation was rescheduled 2 days after delivery 10:00-12:00. Then there was a cancellation so the appointment was moved up 9:00-10:30 even though I preferred the later slot. Then the plumber arrived at 9:40 and was in a super hurry to get to the next appointment while pointing out to me all kinds of problems that are going to run the time and costs up and make him late for his 11:00. "Oh, I didn't know you were on a slab...and have a garbage disposal." Uh, a lot of people are on slabs and have disposals. Shouldn't someone have asked that on the phone? He tells me all kinds of reasons he will have to charge much more than I was told on the phone, for instance, he is going to have to cut the dry wall under the sink because he can't go straight down into the crawl, and I will need two valves instead of one, for both hot water and cold water. I don't know why I wasn't told when I had offered to send more pictures etc. But of course I needed my dishwasher installed. So I told him to go ahead. Then after he finished in under two hours, all I could see was the very result that was explained to me on the phone. I tried to get an explanation of what was different, but he was overly aggressive about collecting and in a big hurry. (Except for asking to play my grand piano. There's time for that.) And he was not the one I spoke to from the company. So I called the office and get this: new story. Now she says they charge $225 for "dishwasher installation" and $150/hour labor, for all hours, and $225 does not include any labor, that is the "dishwasher installation." Huh? If it isn't labor then is it materials? Because I already paid for and provided the dishwasher! The final price came to over $525 and the dishwasher was already there as was the installation kit, so all the materials that were provided were the two valves. So I was charged for 2 hours over the "dishwasher installation" price at $150/hour ... and told that $563 reflects a $100 rebate! Also I was told of a further discount since the plumber and tech - according to GPS - were actually there 2 hours "and change" or whatever you want to say, snacking in the driveway maybe? (a lot of time going over grandiose reasons for the price switching, and asking if he can play my grand piano after he has been under the sink cutting drywall.) When he changed the valve, he also told me he would have to charge extra for taking out my garbage disposal; I said if I had known he was going to remove and reinstall the disposal I might have picked up a new one since mine is old, and to this he says, a new disposal is $250, I have one on the truck, and that is the cost of installation which does not include the price of the disposal. Let me figure this out, to put the same one back in there is the hourly labor charge but to put in a new one I would pay for the disposal plus labor hours PLUS $250 for "disposal installation?" Huh? My engineer friend later told me that if he did not switch out the rubber ring seal then the existing disposal will fail as that always needs to be done when it's removed. Further, the plumber told me there was something stuck in the garbage disposal and I had better be sure to get it out because that is how a lot of disposals get broken. Is that what I have a plumber for? He can't reach in and remove the item while the disposal is out? Now let me comment on the installation itself. It was rushed. Even though I was standing there asking for the plumber to do certain things for me, and being charged hourly, he was not about to do anything but a rush job. I asked if he would make a nice square cut of the drywall so I could repair it easily. Is it square? No. And the drywall and dust all got dumped behind the cabinet inside my wall as he proclaimed, "Look no mess!" (I realize a lower end establishment will not see anything wrong with this approach but given the choice I would have liked the debris in the garbage can myself. By the way, that is an indicator of degree of care.) I asked the tech if I should get my caulking gun from the shed so I could seal behind the dishwasher when the old one is pulled out. He told me, no they have caulk and they'll take care of it. Did they caulk? No. All I got was a tirade on why I will have to call an electrician to get a plug under my sink. The wire was coming out from a tear in sheet-rock from the floor up a few inches. I asked if I could get a cable cover from my shed to feed the wire through. Do you think that happened? The low point was when the plumber told me I should call an electrician right away to redo the tech's wiring so I could sleep at night. I said, I hope I can sleep at night with the hard-wiring you did? And he laughed heartily. He said that once the electrician rewires it he will need to come out again to reattach the water lines. Do you think I am calling Matthew's out again because I don't! The first time I led the tech up to the attic to shut off the water tank, and he went running ahead and knocked the Flood Stop off of its mount. As a consequence the wires are pulled loose. It is still running but is compromised. I was right there but he could not wait for me to tell him how to shut off the water by the Flood Stop buttons. The tech also felt free to go through my house without being accompanied or asking permission to go alone, upstairs and through my bedroom; I was not informed he was going up to turn the water on alone. The Flood Stop was beeping during the night and I had to go up to the attic to reset it. I had bought a pricey floor model dishwasher which was shipped back to Atlanta where a new control panel was put on since the floor model had scratches. Now it is scratched again. There are two brackets to attach the dishwasher to the cabinet and any installer should know to protect the top control panel from the bracket mounts. In the end, I asked what is the black rubber flap at the base? And the tech showed me how much people love this and how much I am going to love this. I said I don't, isn't there a toe kick, and he then said there was but he didn't know how to put it on. I went back to the store and they said a plastic mounting piece is missing and sent it to me, but what I received is the same rubber flap. So I am having to somehow figure this out on my own. So what I got was a damaged dishwasher, a compromised Flood Stop, a potentially compromised disposal, an incomplete rush job that lets in bugs, uneven drywall cuts to repair, questionable wiring, and inflated pricing by a price switching scheme. I'd call that a fail!"

"Beware of this company! I am a general contractor and have never seen a company run so poorly. I tried them out because of their great Google reviews, but unfortunately it did not work out and I had to fire them. I had to call multiple people multiple times to try scheduling work, they were not on time and just generally unprofessional. Obviously, I will not be using them again. Here is a direct quote from and email I received from my customer asking me to bring in another plumber: Some specific concerns include: Lack of Property Protection – Larry does not use shoe covers, floor coverings, or other protective measures. He also does not clean up before leaving. Kitchen Plumbing Rough-In – He left a significant mess in the kitchen that I had to clean myself when he roughed in the kitchen items. Work Under the House – Nails, wood scraps, and water were left behind. He also moved and failed to replace the plastic encapsulating my crawl space, and insulation was left out of place. Kitchen Work – His latest trip to the house, Larry rushed to gather materials to work in the kitchen, but did not complete the work, leaving the materials out. Powder Room Rough-In – He failed to protect my flooring and left debris in my cabinet, which was later moved to the garage. He also discarded scrap piping in my front planter. Wall Cut-Out – He rushed to leave without reinforcing the 2x4s, in the powder room requiring additional work after the flooring is complete. He was only at the house for an hour and had to depart since lives far away. I was expecting him to install items in the kitchen and rough in the bathroom. Nothing was done in the kitchen and minimal was done in the powder room. Tracking Debris – Drywall dust and wood shavings were tracked throughout the house, leaving me with over an hour of cleanup. Some trash was even left in my wife’s office. The mess he left in the bathroom was worse than the mess that you saw under the house. Damage to Cabinets – He nicked a new cabinet door and did not take care when placing the items to work in the kitchen. This happened and he did not do any work. This was just from his tools working near the cabinetry."

Water treatment & purification system installations and replacements FAQs

Water softeners consist of three main components: a mineral tank, a brine tank, and a control valve. In some smaller units, the mineral tank and brine tank are combined into one cabinet.

Professionals install whole-home systems at the point of entry of the main water line. Smaller units are installed under sinks or near a washer—these units only soften the water for that fixture, not the entire home.

  • Mineral Tank: Hard water passes into the mineral tank through resin beads, and an ion exchange occurs. Magnesium and calcium ions are exchanged for sodium or potassium ions from the brine tank.

  • Brine Tank: The brine tank contains sodium or potassium to recharge the resin.

  • Control Valve: The control valve determines when to clean the resin beads.

Choosing between a salt-based or potassium-based water softener depends on your priorities. Salt-based systems effectively remove hard-water minerals, regenerate efficiently, and are cost-effective. However, they may not be ideal for individuals on low-sodium diets. Potassium-based systems neutralize minerals without removing them and regenerate more frequently. They are more expensive but offer a healthier and more environmentally friendly option. If sodium levels are a concern and cost isn't a major factor, a potassium system may be the better choice.

To calculate your water softener's capacity, determine your grains per gallon (GPG) number by:

  • Multiplying the number of people in your home by 90. The average number of gallons used per person for washing, drinking, and cooking ranges from 80 to 100 gallons per day.

  • Multiplying that result by the hardness of your water. The average grains per gallon in the United States is 10 but can range from 0 to 17. You can find your GPG number by purchasing an at-home water testing kit.

Installing a water softener takes between two to four hours on average. The exact duration depends on the complexity of the unit and whether additional plumbing or electrical work is required. If modifications to existing pipes are necessary, installation may take longer. Preparing the installation area by clearing any obstructions can help streamline the process.

Water softeners can last up to 25 years with proper maintenance and care. The lifespan depends on the type and quality of the unit you choose. Single-tank electric water softeners may last around 12 years, while higher-quality models tend to last longer. Regular maintenance, such as routine inspections and timely replacement of salts or potassium, helps extend the life of your system. Most water softeners require minimal repairs over their lifespan.
