"Our small house, built in 1948, is excellently located, but all of the windows were outdated louver windows, which were drafty, allowed external noise to enter, and caused our heating and cooling to escape. We had wanted to replace them for years; however, previous quotes from other companies were well beyond what we could afford. We decided to try again this year and requested a quote from Smart Window Company. David Winkler promptly contacted us on January 18, 2025, and arranged a Virtual Consultation via Zoom for the following day as this was most convenient for us. During the meeting, he spent nearly two hours understanding our specific requirements and exploring available options, providing a detailed explanation regarding the custom replacement windows. He demonstrated professionalism and was approachable throughout the interaction. On January 20, we received our initial quote for replacing 11 windows with 10 new ones, as we opted to merge two old windows into a larger picture window in the master bedroom. All windows included a lifetime guarantee. Although another company provided a significantly lower quote without any guarantee, David diligently worked to adjust the price until it was comparable to the lower quote. Consequently, we signed the contract with Smart Window Company on January 28. The Installation Manager, Tom, visited on February 3 to verify the final measurements for the windows. He professionally explained the installation process and advised us on preparations. On February 8, he informed us via email that our project had been ordered, with delivery expected in 6 to 8 weeks. The windows arrived ahead of schedule, and we scheduled the installation for March 3. On the installation day, the three-man crew led by Bryan, the Crew Leader, arrived promptly at the appointment time. Bryan communicated effortlessly in perfect English with us, and in Spanish with Byron and the rest of the crew. He remeasured everything and verified each window's size. Unfortunately, one window had incorrect dimensions due to a manufacturing error. Nevertheless, the team proceeded efficiently and meticulously, removing the old louvers and installing the replacements within four hours. Bryan assured us that the correct-sized window would be expedited from the manufacturer. The job site was left clean and tidy both inside and outside. Today, on March 19, Peter, the Job Foreman, installed the remaining window, completing the task in less than an hour. Our first impression of Mike Fletcher sold us -- he told us he does not do inspections because he considers it a conflict of interest since his company does the repairs. So he referred us to Certified Chimney Inspectors (Shane Imburgia) who did the most thorough inspection of the 3 estimates we obtained. He sent the report and video and Mike provided an estimate. The team that came was incredibly thorough with everything they did - especially the protection of our home. Everything was covered in plastic and the living room was sealed off so no fine dust would get on anything or out of that room. They spent two days doing significant work to make our fireplace safe and like new for decades to come (with regular cleaning, of course). And they painted everything in the fireplace black with a special paint. It looked so beautiful we asked them to paint our outdoor fireplace too. The flames are magnificent against it! They did an immaculate clean-up and provided us with a temporary chimney cap until the new one arrived. I can't recommend them highly enough and would use them again for any masonry work."

Wainscoting is decorative paneling that covers the lower part of a wall, adding style and protection. Beadboard is a popular type of wainscoting characterized by long, vertical panels with raised beads—small indentations or ridges between the planks. Beadboard panels lock together with a tongue-and-groove joint, while shiplap—a similar style—uses a square-shaped rabbet joint.
The top of the wainscoting should be set at one-third of the room’s height. So, for a standard room with nine-foot ceilings, the wainscoting should extend exactly three feet. This precise measurement creates a balanced, elegant look that enhances overall room proportions and delivers a classic design appearance.
Wainscoting can make a room look smaller if the room has low ceilings. The same rule applies with wainscoting as it does with painting any space: In order to make the room look larger and more open, paint it a light color like white or cream. Since beadboard incorporates vertical lines in the paneling, this style of wainscoting is ideal for those wanting to make a room appear larger than it is.
While wainscoting can technically be used in any room, you’ll typically want to reserve it for a more open space, like a foyer where you want to make a dynamic first impression or a bathroom with tall ceilings. Avoid using wainscoting in small spaces with low ceilings. Open concepts like a living room and kitchen combination also don’t work well with wainscoting because there isn’t a clean break point along the walls.
