"No estimate or work was done so I can't comment on any of that. The salesman apparently so hated to wear a mask that he felt the need to be rude and unprofessional. When an emergency occurred during his visit, he got angry and ran – embarrassing himself and his company. To add insult to injury the company leadership felt the need to insult and try to provoke me. Yes, at the same time the salesman arrived we had a pet emergency. Clearly a minor one to some. The death of a baby chick. Sounds like a joke but it isn't. I have limited mobility so I shouted to my wife for help believing my wife's remaining chicks were also in immediate jeopardy. She was in her flower garden so I opened the window and shouted for her by name. She could not hear me. After watching the remaining chicks suffer in pain I again called for her. Panicking now, I shouted a third time as loud as I could for her, again by name. Not knowing the salesman had even arrived. I didn't know why she was delayed. Hearing me, our oldest son left his mom with the salesman and came to my aid. Upon his arrival and after seeing and evaluating the situation, he went for help. I left the room with him. At that point I saw the salesman, for the first time, in our bathroom at the sink with the door wide open. I asked (using please and sir) he allow me into the bathroom. Like a shot he left the bathroom, angrily stomped down the stairs, out the door and sped away. When I saw my wife she was almost in tears. She was very upset and it took her a number of minutes just to calm down. According to her, and my son, the salesman came up to her in the garden not wearing a mask. We had requested he wear one and was assured by the scheduler that he would. When she asked if he would put on a mask he leaned forward into her face and shouted "what!?!" I can't explain how freighted she told me she was. My son told me he was shocked and believed the salesman came so close to her face and over-accentuated his response to demonstrate how much he resented being asked to wear a mask. My son said it was as if the salesman was faking a cough or sneeze into a customer's face as others have done before being thrown out of stores, etc. According to my son, at this point he heard my shouts for help and left his mom with the salesman and ran to help me. According to my wife, the salesman then held a mask to his face and sarcastically said, all right!?, can we do this!? He apparently followed her as she quickly walked away from him and toward the house. When he entered the house right on her heels, he again very sarcastically said, can we just do this now!? As she described it to me, she with up the stairs with him closely behind. When she went to show him the needed work upstairs, he just left her and went to the bathroom - where I saw him for the first time. Any animal dying in my hands touches my heart - that's just me. As a 60+ yr old 100% permanently disabled veteran you can accuse me of being overly sensitive. My wife is a long retired 30+ year RN, nearly my age and is now my full-time care giver. I am house bound without her. Clearly she and I are not a threat to anyone. Immediately, not knowing what happened I called Handyman Connection twice, hoping to reach someone to find out what had happened. I left two message asking for a return call immediately from someone in authority; that I didn't know if I needed to call an ambulance or the police since my wife was unable to tell me what happened. I wanted an explanation and I wanted it immediately. I got a call back alright…. Apparently from one of the owners. He said he had spoken to the salesman already and knew exactly what happened. He sarcastically 'apologized' and that his salesman understood, that my wife and I must just be ‘having a bad day.’ I was livid. When I accused his salesman of being "mean" to my wife the owner's anger exceeded mine by 100%. He made it clear to me his worker had been an employee for many years and had "hundreds" of positive reviews - that it was just me and my wife. When I repeatedly tried to express the results of the salesman's visit -- the owner verbally fought me, clearly not even pretending to consider any other view but his own. I am not a fighter. I have gone to great lengths to avoid conflict, even to the point of accepting, even fainting support when someone misses or needs to change an appointment, etc. This is a weakness that I have been working on for years. I will do anything to avoid making others feel sad, bad or embarrassed. However, the salesman, and now the company owner had insulted my wife. The owner refused to give me an email address so I could more clearly explain what had happened when I calmed down. He said he didn't want to hear any more of it, or from me again. He added that I was obviously a serial complainer and I didn't matter anyway. He ended by hanging up on me."

McCrea is a family owned business that has served our area since 1936. Financing and rebates are available on Trane systems installed by McCrea. Resistrictions apply and these are limited time offers call for details. "Its hard to stop a Trane"

"We bought a new construction and McCrea installed the HVAC. Home inspection identified the heat pump was not working in Oct. 2020. McCrea identified it was due to leaking refrigerants and promise fixed the issue. Our electric bill was extremely high the following two months and the heat pump was not cooling in Spring 2021. McCrea sent technician and again repaired the system. Bought their maintenance plan. We had 4+ repairs plus regular tune up in the past two years. Last week the heat pump stopped cooling again. We are out of labor warranty and charge us with $89 diagnostic cost after membership discount. It took three days for them to send someone to check while we suffering 90F in our house. They identified the compressor dead and need replacement. They charge $1900 for labor after membership discount. Most likely cause of the compressor failure is "suicide" with assistance. Low refrigerant at beginning and over change in later repairs likely contributed the short life."

FREE IN-HOME ESTIMATES | GET A FREE AIR CONDITIONER Cyprus Air Heating & Cooling is your single resource for all your home comfort needs, from tailoring your ideal comfort system to installation, service and beyond. Cyprus Air installs and repairs a variety of Heating & Cooling equipment. With over 56 years of experience in the business, we also offer other home improvement and indoor comfort services such as Gas Fireplaces & Gas logs, and Duct Cleaning. With so many years of design, and installations in Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland, Cyprus Air offers its service oriented expertise and reliability to ensure the high quality standards that architects, engineers, and homeowners have come to rely on from one of the industry leaders.

"I begin this review by saying that I do not know the ins and outs of this company’s day-to-day doings, nor do I feel that this has been the operations of this company from its start. I choose to write this as a way of providing others with my story so that they may take caution when dealing with them and so that this company can ameliorate their behavior toward their customers. My journey began in October of 2021 when my husband and I decided to place a gas insert in our traditional open fireplace. I went online and found Cyprus Air. They came to our home and did a quote with us, which we accepted. The goal was to have the fireplace inserted in before Christmas. The first step was a gas line to the fireplace. This was the beginning of the continuous problems that would develop for three years. We had multiple issues with the gas line, multiple technicians sent to our home, and had numerous inspections by Fairfax County fail before they finally sent out their “go-to” guy, who managed to fix the problem, leading to us finally passing the inspection on March 11th of 2022. Let me also note, that I made numerous calls to Cyprus Air during this time frame always with a promise of a return call, that NEVER came. I even walked into their showroom in Springfield to get answers after not being able to get anyone to answer my calls. I spoke with a supposed manager over the phone at some point, who also did not return the calls he made promised to do. I then asked to speak to someone higher, which, as far as I know, I did. That was when their “go-to” guy was finally dispatched. This “higher up” gentleman promised to follow up to ensure all went well. I never heard from him either. During the October to March timeframe, the technicians that were dispatched to our address were unprepared, in terms of supplies. They asked us for paper towels and a ladder at one point. The ladder, which was wooden, they managed to break; I contacted the “manager” who informed me he would look into what he could do to remedy the situation. Nothing was done. Also, during this time, we were being charged for a service contract that we signed up for but had no fireplace to service. When asked, we were told that they would take the charges off the back end. This will come into play later in this story. Also, when they finally did install the fireplace and were removing the boxes from the garage to dispose of, they took a large wall hanging that was still in its box that had just been purchased. This was also mentioned to Cyprus without any resolution. Finally, in May the fireplace was fully installed and ready to go, just in time for summer. We utilized it in the winter of 2022 and in March of 2023, we made our first service call, just to ensure everything was working properly. They came out did a bit of cleaning and left, however, they did not note that there were lightbulbs that were not working. So, we contacted Cyprus Air to let them know this had been missed. They then sent out another technician, who took note of the bulbs and stated that he would place the order, and someone would be in contact to schedule another visit once they came in. We never heard from Cyprus, and we waited for a very long time (mostly because we were tired of making calls). We finally called to check the status of the bulbs (about 6 months later) to be told they had no record of the order and would need to send another technician out to take a look because they didn’t know which type to order. So, the technician came out in November of 2023, took the information, and again stated he would place the order, and someone would contact us. Again, no contact. Also, as another note, the remote for our fireplace magically disappeared after this service call. When I called Cyprus and mentioned that I thought the technician had taken it, but wasn’t 100% sure, they informed me that it would be another service call and $500 to replace the remote. At the beginning of February, I was done dealing with this company, so we called to request the service contract be terminated. Please note, that we signed a one-year service contract and were told it would go month to month after the year and we could cancel at any time. When we called, we were told that they were not sure they could cancel and that there may be additional charges, but that someone would contact us about this. Again, no contact, however, they did set up a service call for us and had someone show up at our home on February 21, 2024. We were unaware of this service call until the day of. No one was at the home upon the technician’s arrival. I contacted Cyprus via the text they sent regarding the service call and stated: “Didn’t schedule service. Asked for a service contract to be terminated.” For which I received the following reply: “ok, sent an email to cancel”. The next day I received the following reply to my cancellation “Good morning, this is Kimberly with Cyprus Air Heating & Cooling contacting you in regards to your request to cancel your maintenance contract. There are 3 more payments due in order to cancel in the of $120. I can charge the card on file for the final 3 payments to complete the 12-month contract and cancel. Please either respond to this text or give us a call at 571-367-9600. Thank you.” I then replied with: “We have had it for well over a year and were told we could cancel anytime after August of 2023. Very confused.” For which the following reply was received: “No ma’am, the contract is 12 months per visit. You had 2 visits with us and made 21 payments, resulting in 3 more payments due. It is a 12-month period per visit. Once you have another visit it renews for another 12 months. This is all stated in the contract you signed.” Needless to say, my reply was friendly back, as I reminded them that we only ever had one service call, but that things were not completed, and to this day had still not been fixed. I also mentioned that I had been trying to get out from “underneath” them and did not trust anything. I insisted that they cancel the contract, and NOT charge me the $120. I may or may not have mentioned getting Lawyers involved at this point also. The reply I received was priceless: “That is fine, the account will go to collections. Thank you! There is a lot of information here, but I feel it is necessary for anyone who is truly looking to deal with this company to have the full story from a “customer”. I wish you luck!"

Swamp cooler installations and replacements FAQs

Swamp coolers are quite energy-efficient, using only 15% to 35% of the electricity that traditional central air conditioning units consume. This can lead to significant savings on your energy bills. However, keep in mind that swamp coolers require water to operate and may not cool your home as effectively in extremely hot or humid conditions. When considering overall efficiency, it is essential to weigh both electricity and water usage, as well as the cooling needs specific to your local climate.

Evaporative coolers only work in dry climates because they cool by moistening the air. If the air is already moist, this will have little to no cooling effect. Central AC is a better choice if you live in a humid climate, such as the Midwest, eastern, or western coastal regions.

To install a swamp cooler on a roof, a local HVAC specialist will first find and cut a spot free of wiring and obstructions. They’ll then install metal bracing, legs, brackets, the ceiling duct register, ductwork, power, and thermostat wires. Once installed, they’ll seal all openings, attach duct connections, and install a thermostat. Before leaving, they’ll run cool water piping to the unit and inspect all the connections.

The cost to repair your swamp cooler ranges from $50 to $600, depending on the issue, whether new parts are needed, and the chosen repair service. Depending on the type of pad your system uses, you will need to change out the pads every one to three years for proper operation. When budgeting for the cost to repair a window unit, expect to pay around $230.

The U.S. Department of Energy states that swamp coolers can cool a single room by five to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. However, this largely depends on the size and installation method of the evaporative cooler. You can only achieve these results in a dry climate, such as the American South, as it’s easier to cool rooms in humid environments with central air.

Swamp cooler water usage varies depending on the size of the unit. Smaller evaporative units may use one gallon per hour, while much larger units could use up to 15 gallons of water per hour. Most homeowners can expect their unit to use between seven and 10 gallons of water per hour of usage.
