  Comment: I live in a 100-year-old Harlem building. My washing machine, in kitchen pantry, has been pouring water onto the floor during rinse cycles. Original plumber thought it was from too much cat hair, so we put pantyhose over that pipe to collect hair before it entered the drain. I would clean fur from the pantyhose prior to each wash cycle - an inconvenient task given its location. This didn’t solve the problem. Eventually became clear that there’s a large clog in the long (not straight) pipe running between my washing machine and kitchen sink, as the sink stopped draining properly. There’s also a dishwasher draining into that pipe. Plumber tried snaking several times, then used a device with a “balloon” on the end to try pushing the clog through and out. This seemed to work, briefly. But now the clog is so bad that sludgy water backs up into kitchen sink if the faucet runs for too long.
